Prior to season,
Palm Beach High's prospective varsity basketball players were
lured into the athletic building where a doctor was waiting to
give the players flu shots. Wildcat varsity basketball coach Joe
Ceravolo was taking no chances. The year before, his team was
hit by a flu epidemic which seriously hindered the team's
progress throughout the season. Such key personnel as 6'4"
Roger Meldrum and 6'9" Gary Tassin were sidelined much of
the year because of sickness. The ’65-’66 squad finished
with a 16-11 record but only lost two graduating seniors from
the squad. Coach Ceravolo was doing everything possible at the
beginning of the ’66-’67 season to give his team that extra
edge. As a direct result of his flu shots (two series) only one
player missed a game, Meldrum. The coach even devised a method
for the squad to tie their shoes. Instead of the conventional
way, he had the team tie their shoes soccer style to keep them
from coming off during games. |

One day the squad members
were taken individually into the dressing room to undergo a series of
tests that bore a strange resemblance to Army tests. “I thought we
were going to be drafted,” said Peter Broberg. The Army was not after
the team though; the coach just wanted to find out such things as: Does
a certain player favor his left or right eye, his left or right foot, or
his left or right hand? How good are his reflexes? How well does he
react under pressure? The tests were found to be very valuable. For
example, Chip Babcock was sent into the game to stop Forest Hill's Glen
Winkler because Chip favors his left hand which was opposite Glen's
shooting arm. Charlie Craft did better under pressure, so he often went
into games late. The Wildcats even changed their warm-up procedure
because Mr. Ceravolo found that the team should be at a peak before the
game started. As a result, the Wildcat Varsity Basketball Squad had one
of its finest seasons compiling a 22-4 overall record. |

The ’Cats won the
seventh annual Christmas Tournament, were the Suncoast Conference Co-
Champions, and were the district 8-AA Champs. Coach
Ceravolo was the one dominant reason the team did as well as it did.
Palm Beach High's ultimate goal was to go to state, which was the reason
for the slogan “STATE IN ’67.” |
